As the winter season continues in the Adirondacks, the Lake Placid Olympic Museum is proud to unveil a special pop-up exhibit in honor of the 45th anniversary of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. Our new temporary exhibit, Remembering 1980: Stories That Unite Us will open on January 31st, and it is unlike anything we’ve done before.

This exhibit is about memories—the moments that made you cheer, cry, or feel a sense of pride so strong that they stayed with you for 45 years. The big idea behind this project is one we hold close to our hearts: The 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid ignited global inspiration and local and national pride, leaving a legacy of unforgettable moments and enduring stories that continue to unite and inspire generations.

But what makes this exhibit unique is its personal touch. We invited visitors and community members to submit their favorite memories of 1980; their contributions have become the heart of this experience.

Your Stories Bring History to Life

This exhibit’s stories come from people like you—visitors, locals, and fans who lived through the Games. They remind us why we’re here: to share the key message of this exhibit; personal stories make history come alive, connecting us to the past and each other.

My favorite memory submitted is a charming and heartwarming story from Mark Carter. In February 1980, 12-year-old Mark Carter’s ordinary drive through rural New York took an extraordinary turn when his family met the Soviet ice hockey team. Decades later, a rediscovered photo and a chance connection brought the memory full circle, turning a childhood encounter into a treasured family story spanning generations and continents. To learn the rest of Mark’s story, visit the exhibit this February!

Listen to History

A highlight of the exhibit is a vintage landline phone that allows visitors to experience the 1980 Olympic Winter Games through oral histories. By picking up the receiver, you can listen to ten unique stories from volunteers, athletes, staff, and spectators, giving a personal glimpse into the moments that made the Games so extraordinary. In collaboration with the North Elba Narratives Oral History Project and the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society, these recordings bring the magic of the 1980 Games to life.

Connect with the Legacy

Remembering 1980 is more than just a display—it’s an invitation to reflect on how the spirit of those Winter Games continues to inspire. Whether you’re reliving your own memories or discovering these stories for the first time, this exhibit creates a space to connect with the enduring legacy of 1980.

The pop-up exhibit is open for a limited time, so bundle up and join us as we celebrate the stories that unite us. Together, we’ll honor the moments that shaped history and continue to inspire generations.
